QB partners with MUIS to replace & give kiosks at five mosques in Singapore

EZ-LINK CARD OFFERS MUSLIMS A CONVENIENT, CASHLESS CHANNEL TO MEET RELIGIOUS OBLIGATION
Issued By: QB Pte Ltd

SINGAPORE, 27 October 2003 – QB Pte Ltd (QB), a wholly owned subsidiary of Green Dot Payment Services (GDPS), member of Singapore Technologies, is pleased to announce that in cooperation with Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS), it has extended its “Tap & Give” Programme to enable Muslims to contribute their annual alms, or zakat, through their ez-link cards.

The programme was launched over the weekend on 25 October 2003 by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Community Development and Sports and Minister in-charge of Muslim Affairs at White Sands Shopping Mall in Pasir Ris. The Minister was there to mark the start of Ramadan, and launched the event with a tap.

Instead of contributing zakat through the traditional channels of cash, cheque, or cashiers orders, QB offers Muslims in Singapore a new and easy way to meet their religious obligation with just a tap.

Similar to the President’s Challenge 2003 Tap & Give Programme, QB will place Tap & Give Kiosks at five selected mosques for the month of Ramadan, to facilitate the collection of zakat and other donations to the mosque. Muslims will be able to easily and quickly contribute their donations by keying in the amount to be donated, and tapping their ez-link card on an integrated sensor. A receipt will be printed to confirm that the donor has given the required amount of zakat.

With the collection of money handled electronically, MUIS will enjoy the efficiencies of using a cashless system, while decreasing the chances of human error. In addition, the system is able to generate reports almost instantly, giving MUIS an accurate assessment of up-to-date collections.

To facilitate the collection and coordination of the zakat and donations, QB has setup a complete front-end and back-end system. For the front-end, QB has custom developed a graphical user interface for the kiosks to allow Muslims to direct their contribution towards their zakat or as a contribution to the mosque. On the back-end, QB will enable MUIS to track the amounts collected.

Ms Norma Sit, CEO of QB, said, "The ez-link card based Tap & Give programme has demonstrated how an organisation can employ QB’s solutions to optimise and ease the logistic and administrative issues involved in the handling of small-value, high-volume monetary transactions in open, public spaces. QB is glad to share our knowledge and experience with MUIS by assisting with the collection of zakat and other donations during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, through the implementation of a donor-collection system. The programme is an exciting demonstration of how the ez-link card can be deployed beyond transport purposes and in an innovative way to enable traditional money collection."
